פאו דה ארקו

פאו דה ארקו Pau d'arco מוכר גם בשם לפאצ'ו עץ חזק במיוחד שמוצאו בברזיל וביערות הגשם של דרום אמריקה. לעץ פאו דה ארקו היה שימוש רב חשיבות בקרב המקומיים, עלי העץ וקליפתו שימשו לחליטה לצרכי ריפוי ממחלות רבות הקשורות למערכת החיסון ,לריפוי ממחלות זיהומיות החל מהרעלות מזון, שפעת, מחלות חום, מחלות דרכי העיכול, מחלות מין ומחלות סרטן.
ענפי העץ שימשו לבניין והענפים הצעירים שימשו לבניית קשתות לצייד ומכאן שמו ארקן = קשת.

היסטוריה

הילידים בני המקום שמו לב כי כל גזעי העצים ביערות הגשם מכוסים בגידולים טפיליים כמו סוגי אזוב, עובש ופטריות ואילו גזעי עצי פאו דה ארקו נותרו נקיים מטפילים. סיבה זו הביאה את בני המקום להשתמש בקליפת העץ כחומר המרחיק טפילים וגורמים מחוללי מחלות.
רישום ממצאים וטיפול במחלות בעזרת פאו דה ארקו מתועדים החל משנת 1873.
מדענים אשר בחנו את תכונות המרפא שבעץ מצאו 2 סוגים של חומרים פעילים בקליפה הפנימית של העץ פאו דה ארקו, חומרים אלו ידועים בשם naphthoquinones, ובקבוצה מצויים החומרים lapacho לפאצ'ו , beta-lapachone בטא-לפצ'און
